FAQs About AI GSM Machine

At iStof, we understand that adopting new technology often comes with questions. Our AI Smart GSM Machine is designed to bring accuracy, speed, and simplicity to fabric testing, and this FAQ section will help you learn how it works, what makes it unique, and how it can support your challenges of GSM testing

What is the principle of obtaining the gram per square meter without using a circular sample?

A high-definition camera captures the fabric being measured, automatically recognizes the outline, and calculates the precise area, thereby determining the gram per square meter by correlating with the sample weight measured on weighing scale of the AI GSM machine.

What is the precision of weighing scale used by AI GSM machine?

The actual weight precision of the scale is 0.01 grams.

Is the GSM obtained without a circular sample accurate?

The error rate possibility for area calculation of this product is +/-1.5% depending on the size of the fabric sample.
This is due to yarn fringes coming out of the sample due to uneven cutting of fabric sample, which causes the small error in the area calculation.
Small wrinkles in the fabric samples also affects the area calculation sometimes.

Does the shape of the fabric sample affect the measurement result?

No, it does not. This product is equipped with a high-performance computing device that can accurately recognize the external contour of the fabric sample regardless of its shape and precisely calculate the area.
However, it is strongly recommended to ensure that the fabric sample does not have any residual threads or jagged edges to ensure high calculation accuracy.

Why sometimes there is a slight deviation between the GSM measured and that obtained from a circular sample?

In case of traditional GSM machine, industry has been using it for years and it is considered that GSM measured with this is accurate, while as a standard norms traditional method also has slight variation compared to the actual GSM of fabric due to various reasons:

  • a. The allowable error rate for the traditional standard circular sample is +/-3%, and the area of the circular sample itself has a certain error due to uneven cutting by traditional blades, not exactly 100 cm².
  • b. The diameter of the standard circular sample is 11.28 cm, and some manufacturers’ circular samples have a diameter deviation of 1 mm, resulting in an actual GSM deviation of 1.7-1.8%; in extreme cases, the diameter deviation of the circular sample is visible to the naked eye (2-3 mm or more), in which case the GSM deviation exceeds 5%.
  • c. During the sampling process with the cutting tool, the fabric may be slightly stretched, and a slight difference of 1 mm may not be visible to the naked eye, but the actual gram per square meter deviation is 1.7-1.8%; irregular or unclean sampling (residual threads, etc.) may also lead to a 2-3% deviation.

At the same time, in case of iStof AI GSM Machine, non-circular sampling (cutting any shape with scissors), the following phenomena also occur:

  • a. Some fabrics, especially those with spandex elasticity, certain knitted fabrics or some f luffy fabrics, may shrink slightly when cut with scissors, meaning the area changes slightly. Scale weighs the sample correctly, and the area of placed sample is also measured correctly by cameras, but the area of cut sample has changed compared to original fabric, so the measured GSM might be little different than the actual GSM
  • b. Some fabrics are not very uniform locally, and even in case of traditional testing, a 10 cm² circular sample may yield different results competed to a 100 cm² sample; this phenomenon is particularly evident in jacquard, embroidered fabrics, and also in some raised fabrics like Corduroys
Does it affect the result, if the fabric being measured is not completely flat but slightly wrinkled?

There will be a very slight impact. The smart scale itself considers slight wrinkles in the area calculation using machine vision and has corresponding compensation and conversion methods based on the degree of wrinkles. However, when the wrinkle angle exceeds 18 degrees, the gram weight deviation will be larger. It is recommended to keep the fabric as flat as possible or use the provided glass pressing plate to cover the fabric before measurement. For specific methods, please refer to the “User Manual”.

Does the size of the fabric sample affect the measurement result?

It does have some impact. Generally, the larger the sample (within the scale’s range), the higher the accuracy. Though the machine is designed to measure the GSM of any size but smaller fabric cutting has the chances of deviation because any small error in the fabric in the form of wrinkles, protruding threads (Even smaller) etc will have larger impact on the area calculation error in terms of percentage of total area of that small sample.

E.g. when the area of the fabric being measured is less than 10 cm², its actual weight is usually only about 0.03-0.15 grams, and slight deviations in the area or the actual gram weight measured by the scale will show a larger percentage. If the fabric weight is less than 0.1 grams, very slight loss of threads or debris can cause a significant percentage change in weight, making it appear “inaccurate”. In such cases, the measurement result is for reference only, or the weight can be rechecked using a ten-thousandth scale based on the area measured by our smart gram scale.

Below is small guideline for errors percentage for different sample sizes:

  • a. Sample size more than 20 cm²: Error range between 1 – 1.5%
  • b. Sample size between 10 cm² – 20 cm²: Error range between 1.5% – 3.0%
  • c. Sample size less than 10 cm²: Indicative GSM given for reference
Why does reading on the smart gram scale display keep changing sometimes?

This situation often occurs when the sample being measured is very small or the actual weight is less than 0.5 grams.

The smart gram scale uses a high-precision scale with a measurement accuracy of 0.01 grams (the device is set to a division value of 0.001 grams for precision). Very slight external air pressure conduction, including external environmental wind when windows are open, indoor air conditioning wind, and exhaling, sighing, or speaking loudly when too close to the scale, will cause changes in the actual weight measured. In this case, a 0.001-gram pressure (weight measured by the scale) change will show a larger percentage change, so the scale reading will f luctuate. In such cases, it is recommended to use a wind shield.

In very rare cases, significant changes in the light environment above the scale (lights suddenly brightening or dimming, etc.) may cause some changes in the shadow area of the fabric being measured, and the scale reading may also fluctuate slightly. It is recommended to place the scale in a stable light environment.

What is the product warranty?

The standard warranty period is one year.

Is there any maintenance cost of the product we start using it?

All the parts and processes of the product are electronic and there is no mechanical part or process involved in the product. So there is no specific maintenance required for the product. Just a small process of calibration required which can be done by the user himself following our guideline video for the calibration, and there is no need of any professional for the process
